THE PROJECT

In these dark times of an international pandemic, where people are isolated in their homes and facing massive economic strain, what does resilience look like? How do we maintain community? How do we keep people healthy and fed?
One of the answers is community gardening. In response to COVID-19, my boyfriend and I will work with the community to build backyard victory gardens for families so they can have healthy food throughout the insecurity caused by this crisis. What is a victory garden? During the constraints of WWII, people were encouraged to build gardens in their backyards to help feed everyone in times of crisis.
We will build free gardens for low income households, and build gardens for charge for people willing to donate. All funds go towards building people more free gardens! We want to begin immediately, as spring is the time for gardening!
Over the summer when the produce is flourishing, we will come back to the gardens and glean produce to distribute to the food bank. What is gleaning? It means getting all the extra produce you can't eat, and getting into the hands of people who will eat it!
This will help build community while maintaining social distancing, and help with efforts to keep people happy and fed, all the while encouraging self-sustainable practices.
If the social distancing regulations are uplifted by fall, we also want to have a fall harvest dinner where people can pay for a plate of a delicious farm to table meal, where all of the profits go towards relief efforts for families in need.
It is more important than ever now to eat healthy, nutritious food to stay healthy. Also, maintaining your garden and working with soil is proven to help with stress!
My boyfriend and I are Thousand Oaks High School graduates doing this project for our final quarter of university. We want to encourage healthy eating, healthy minds, and healthy communities.
